Salemi rests on an isolated hill overlooking the upper Belìce Valley. Included among the Borghi più Belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), the town boasts thousands of years of history dating back to ancient Elymnian Halicyae, substantiated by the excavations at Monte Polizzo and Mokarta.
The medieval center is distinguished by paved alleys, stone stairways, and the commanding Norman-Swabian Castle commissioned by Roger the Norman. Nearby stands the Jesuit College museum complex, housing the Civic Museum, the Risorgimento Museum, and the famous Ritual Bread Museum.
Salemi is world-renowned for the Cene di San Giuseppe (St. Joseph's Altars) in March, when intricate devotional altars decorated with hand-carved breads are erected—true works of art celebrating rural craftsmanship and community devotion.
