The Belice Cycle Route is taking shape: a new 30-kilometer cycling and walking trail crossing the Belice Valley, highlighting rural landscapes, historic villages, and contemporary art landmarks.
Funding and Project Launch
The project, promoted by GAL Valle del Belice within the Local Development Strategy “Belice 2020”, secured 807,000 euros in funding from the Sicilian Region. Construction works were completed at the end of November 2025.
Intervention in Menfi: Upgrading Existing Cycle Paths
Alongside the new cycle path along the former Castelvetrano–Salaparuta railway line, the project includes major maintenance on an 8-kilometer section of the former Castelvetrano–Porto Empedocle line near Bertolino di Mare (Menfi), upgrading safety and accessibility.
An Iconic Itinerary: Sinapa Forest and Burri’s Cretto
The route combines nature with culture: traversing Belice landscapes, bordering the Sinapa Forest, and connecting directly to Gibellina and the world-renowned Cretto di Burri, one of the most iconic contemporary land art monuments in Sicily.
Integrated Network with GAL Elimos
As part of a broader green mobility strategy, cooperation with GAL Elimos connects the railway route from Calatafimi-Segesta to Santa Ninfa, building integrated regional itineraries linking Segesta – Santa Ninfa – Gibellina.
Historical Heritage and Railway Engineering
The route preserves historical railway engineering assets, such as the seven-arch viaduct over the Modione stream, restored as a prime attraction for cyclists and hikers.
A Railway Born to Connect the Valley
The narrow-gauge Castelvetrano–Salaparuta railway was initiated in 1910 and operated until the 1968 earthquake. Today, that historic corridor is revitalized with a sustainable mission: connecting people and places.
